The exhibition “Gnadenwald” explores phenomena associated with near-death experiences. The artist Carmen Brucic is interested in expanding the transition zones through close-up shots, zooming in until gravity is suspended, distinctions such as man/woman disappear, delimited spaces dissolve, identities lose their definition, abysses open up, and the world disappears. The exhibition title “Gnadenwald,” literally “Forest of Grace,” denotes a place of longing, but it is also the artist’s birthplace, where she created most of the works for this project. “Gnadenwald,” in Brucic’s words, is her vision of a homeland “we find our way back to when we need to distance ourselves from worldly things and find redemption.” This motif is explored through large-sized photographs and a sound installation.
